History of Paintball When Did It Start

Tracing the Origin of Paintball: From a Simple Idea to a Worldwide Phenomenon

Have you ever wondered when did paintball start? You wouldn't be alone in that curiosity. As it turns out, paintball has an intriguing history that has captivated players and non-players alike. From a humble backyard barter to an international phenomenon, let's take a look at the history of paintball.

In 1981, three friends Charles Gaines, Hayes Noel, and Bob Gurnsey took a trip into the woods of New Hampshire. Hailing from different backgrounds, the trio had a plan to have some outdoors fun. Little did they know that this was about to create a global legacy.

The trio discovered that farmers used paint-marking guns that shot dye-filled pellets. When the farmers were marking their cattle, the pellets left a visible, but harmless, mark. The threesome soon put two and two together and derived their own inspiration from these paint guns.

The ingenious trio decided to mark each other with the paint pellets instead. Thus, paintball was born.

In 1981, the first paintball game took place the 12-player The Great Northeastern Woodlands Game. Gurnsey, Noel, Gaines, and their friends engaged in the game to experience a novel way of hunting, as distinct from traditional shooting guns. This meant no harm was caused to anyone or any wildlife.

The ground rules were simple. The players were divided into two teams. One team had to reach a particular checkpoint while the other had to prevent them from doing so. After Gurnsey's team won, paintball quickly caught the spirit of adventure hunters.

In 1983, Gurnsey opened the first-ever commercial paintball store in Rochester, NY. Then things started to snowball, and paintball expanded into its own industry. Players had to purchase paintball markers, masks, and paintballs from franchises, and the game started to gain attention all over the country.

By the mid-1980s, the game had spread across the US. To popularize it further and also test the strength of the paintball equipment, Gurnsey organized a cross-country tour. He also helm- edited a paintball magazine called Tactical paintball and co-founded the National Professional Paintball League.

Paintball soon made its way across the Atlantic and began to take shape in the UK, Australia, Jersey, and South Africa. By the 1990s, it was a popular pastime in many countries. Events such as the Paintball World Cup and the UK Paintball Sports Championship took the sport to a new level.

The face of paintball has changed significantly since it's initial days. Paintball masks are now manufactured with thermal lenses, special visors, and a range of other features for the ultimate paintball experience. Paintball guns have also evolved. Gas-powered paintball markers can now shoot multiple rounds with greater precision and muzzle velocity.

Paintball has come a long way since its initial days in the woods of New Hampshire. From Gurnsey and his friends to dedicated paintballers, the legacy of paintball lives on.

Whether it's a high-adrenaline adventure in the woods or a professional game, paintball is here to stay. What started off in an obscure corner of America has become an international phenomenon today.
